Extra Edge Learning Opportunities has been contracted by Eastern Suffolk BOCES to conduct summer enrichment programs at Boyle Road Elementary School in the Comsewogue School District, Academy Street Elementary School in the Bayport-Blue Point School District, at May G. Clarkson Elementary School in the Bay Shore School District and at Sycamore Elementary School for the Connetquot School District. All students living in Suffolk County, NY and entering grades 1-7 in September, 2017 are eligible.
The 2017 program will include READING FOR ALL, a unique reading program that provides thirty minutes of small group reading instruction for readers of all levels, including the advanced reader. Assessments from previous years have shown that six weeks of READING FOR ALL greatly improve reading strategies. This program is planned for Connetquot, Comsewogue and Bay Shore this year.
The full day program will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Connetquot,Comsewogue and Bayport-Blue Point and from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Bay Shore. The half day program will run from 9 a.m. to 12 noon and 8:30 to noon respectively.
To meet the needs of working parents, an extended child care program will be available from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.and from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Comsewogue; from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 4:00 to 5:30 at Connetquot and Bayport-Blue Point; and from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m at Bay Shore.
Students must register by late May for two-week sessions at Connetquot, Comsewogue and Bayport-Blue Point and for three week sessions at Bay Shore. The sessions begin on July 3, July 17 and July 31 at Comsewogue , Connetquot and Bayport Blue Point and on July 3 and July 24 at Bay Shore. The programs will end on August 11, however, there the Summer Fun Program will continue until September 1 at Comsewogue. Program space is limited in all four programs.
The program is designed so that every child will experience a literacy class, a science enrichment class and an integrated learning class from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. Examples include: Robotics, Legoland, Bubblemania,, Viva Espanol, MoreToMath, Rocketry, Legomotion, Cook Up A Story, Reader's Theatre, Web Design, Colonial Games and Chef Shop. Students in the Connetquot, Bay Shore and Comsewogue programs will also participate in READING FOR ALL, a special program designed to improve every student's reading level while enjoying the excitement of books.
Special field trips to Splish Splash, the Long Island Aquarium at Riverhead and the Long Island Children's Museum are planned at Connetquot, Comsewogue and Bayport Blue Point and the Bay Shore program will use the Greenwood YMCA facilities.
The afternoon program will feature programs in arts and crafts, swimming instruction, outdoor physical education, team sports, indoor physical education and strategic games. As in all programs managed by Extra Edge Learning Opportunities, students will enjoy a hands-on approach to learning in a fun-filled environment.
